Why I Love Autumn: Colorful Walks, Tea and Slower Evenings

Why I love autumn — colorful walks, photographing autumn nature, warm tea and slower evenings at home. And a few things I don't love about it.

Why I Love Autumn: Colorful Walks, Tea and Slower Evenings

I don’t think I started loving autumn overnight. But I’ve always liked colorful autumn leaves. Even as a little girl I noticed them and found them fascinating. My friends and I loved walking through them, or collecting them. 🙂

I think I only really started noticing it much more later in life, once my life slowed down a bit and I began paying more attention to things around me.

But maybe it was really our autumn trips that made me realize just how beautifully nature can change within a few weeks. Trees that were still completely green not long ago gradually turn yellow, orange or red, and the landscape suddenly looks completely different. 🍂

And of course, all those autumn colors tempt me to take photos too. On our trips I often catch myself stopping by colorful trees, avenues or fallen leaves, thinking about where the photo would look best. Maybe it’s partly thanks to photography that you start noticing even the ordinary things around you a little more.

When the avenue near our house starts to change

One of those ordinary things is the linden avenue on our street. All summer the trees are green, and you walk past them almost automatically. Then autumn arrives. The leaves slowly turn yellow, gradually fall, and within a few weeks the whole avenue completely transforms. Every year it somehow makes me stop, at least for a moment. I realize that one period is ending and another is beginning. That everything around us keeps changing, even though we sometimes don’t notice it during ordinary days. Just like in life, something is always changing.

Autumn trips without the summer heat

Another reason I love autumn is, of course, trips. We travel throughout the year, but autumn travel has its own charm for me. Mainly, it’s usually not as hot as in summer, which suits me much better when walking around and exploring new places. Colorful nature can also completely change places that we might see differently in summer. Of course, you also have to expect more rain in autumn. But I carry an umbrella in my backpack almost all the time anyway, so a bit of rain usually doesn’t surprise me that much. ☂️

What I don’t like so much about autumn

So it doesn’t sound like autumn is a completely perfect season for me, there are of course things I don’t like so much about it. What bothers me most is probably when it rains for several days in a row. I know water is needed and rain belongs to autumn, but when it’s overcast and wet outside for days, I start missing the sun quite a bit. It’s also a bit strange getting used to it getting dark so much earlier all of a sudden. On the other hand, those early autumn evenings do have something to them.

Time for soups and warm tea

With cooler days arriving, our cooking changes a bit too. I get a craving for soup much more often. It warms you up nicely and it’s also an easy way for me to get vegetables and other ingredients into our meals. And then, of course, tea season begins. I drink various teas, often herbal ones, and in autumn I seem to enjoy them even more than during the rest of the year. There’s something nice about coming home from the cold and making yourself something warm. 🍵

Maybe evenings are one of the reasons I see autumn as a season of slowing down a bit. It gets dark early outside, and you no longer feel like you have to rush out somewhere to make the most of the last hours of daylight.

What I like doing in autumn

Thinking about it, I don’t actually need a long list of autumn activities. It’s enough for me to go on a trip or a walk, watch the colorful nature and, of course, photograph it. When the weather isn’t on my side, I don’t mind staying home, cooking something nice, making tea, opening a book, or watching a movie with my husband in the evening. And that’s exactly what I love about autumn. It’s not just about colorful trees. It’s also about noticing that the world around us has changed a little again.

I’m already looking forward to autumn colors, trips, walks, photography, soups, herbal teas and slower evenings at home. 🍁
