They Made a Lamborghini Out of Scrap — and So Much More! The Hands-On Steel Art Museum in Prague

During one of our other trips to Prague, it happened to be raining. We didn’t want to let a bit of wet weather ruin our mood, so we decided to visit the Steel Art Museum (also known as the Gallery of Steel Figures) right in the historic center of Prague, on Celetná Street. 🌧️

And I have to say it was absolutely amazing! This place has two whole floors, and it’s incredible to see everything you can create out of plain old scrap iron.

A ticket costs 349 CZK for an adult if you buy it at the box office. But if you buy it online, like we did, you’ll pay 279 CZK per adult. Every now and then you can also find a discount on tickets on Slevomat.

The Story from the Scrapyard: How the World-Famous Gallery of Steel Figures Was Born

The original idea was born in Poland, not far from Warsaw, at a scrapyard in Pruszków. The project’s founder, known as “Jose” — Mariusz Olejnik — was simply looking at those giant piles of old scrap and told himself he had to do something with it. The scrap market crisis at the time inspired him to breathe a whole new, artistic life into the waste. 🗿

All of the figures are made one hundred percent from recycled metal waste. And leading artists from all over the world took part in creating the sculptures. Someone must have put an unimaginable amount of work into it. Just imagine — on the wall there, it says that 4 people work an incredible 7,000 hours of manual welding on a single steel car! Even the tables and chairs for sitting were stylishly made of metal.

An Unconventional Museum in Prague Where Touching Is Allowed

And what’s the biggest advantage of the whole museum? You’re allowed to touch everything. My friend, my husband and I had an incredible time. You can even sit right behind the wheel of the giant steel cars. We sat in the Lamborghini, for example, and on the big motorcycle. 🙂

The museum also includes a souvenir shop. You can buy smaller metal models of cars, motorcycles or figures there, which people can take home as a keepsake. I bought myself some of those pin-on badges for my backpack.

Fun for Kids: Life-Size Steel Minions and Transformers

The whole museum is literally packed with movie characters. Inside you’ll come across life-size Transformers (Optimus Prime and Bumblebee), the Avengers, the adorable alien E.T., the entire Simpsons family, or the Terminator. And many more…

It was mainly the kids who had a blast here — there’s a special kids’ corner reserved just for them. The little ones had an amazing time and their faces just lit up whenever they got to explore the steel Minions. 💛
