Trip tip in Slovakia: Salaš Krajinka 🏔️🧀

I haven’t posted anything on social media for a while — that’s because we were on holiday in the Tatras. 🏔️

When we were planning our trip to the Low Tatras, we were looking for a place along the way to stop, stretch our legs and grab something good to eat. Completely by chance, we spotted Salaš Krajinka in Ružomberok on the map. It was only when we actually arrived that we realised just how popular and well-known the place is. It was our first visit and I have to say it genuinely surprised us — in the best way.

We set off on a Saturday and this was our very first stop in Slovakia. There were a lot of people — it’s clear that practically everyone who drives past stops here. The whole grounds are beautifully done, with lovely wooden buildings in a traditional style that give the place a real shepherd’s-hut atmosphere.

What caught my eye straight away was that geese and ducks wander freely all around the place. The kids were delighted and I think it makes it a perfect stop for families. 🪿

And for food — we obviously had to buy cheese, and it was absolutely amazing. I wanted to photograph it for you, but honestly, it disappeared before I even managed to pull my phone out of my pocket. 😅 So at least I have a photo of the little sales window where everything is sold. We also tried the pastries. They were good — solid, traditional fare — but the cheese was the real star for me. 🙂🧀

And what won over my husband? At the back of the grounds there’s a large hangar with an exhibition of vintage tractors. It’s genuinely interesting, so there’s something for everyone — small children, grown-ups and anyone who loves old machinery. 🚜

We did see sheep, but only through the glass. We went in early April — it was probably still too cold to let them outside. But the views of the surrounding countryside are lovely, even with a bit of cloud cover. 🐑

There’s also a restaurant on site, but it was completely packed. All in all it’s a great stop on the way to a holiday. We’re so glad we found it by accident. 👍🙂

What about you — if you’re heading to the Low Tatras, will you stop by for some excellent cheese? 🙂
