A Unique Lookout Tower With No Stairs 🌀

A trip to the Moravian lookout tower Stezka nad vinohrady in Kobylí — a barrier-free spiral with not a single step, views over the vineyards, and a proper 'scent of home' from the cowshed along the way.

A Unique Lookout Tower With No Stairs 🌀

Every year we try to spend at least two or three days in Moravia, where I’m from. It’s close to my heart and we always go on various day trips around the area.

My husband’s parents and his aunt and uncle often come along. It’s always a great group — his aunt loves Moravia and Moravian folk music, and his uncle, for his part, loves wine. 🙂🍷

This time we headed out to Kobylí. On the hill called Kobylí Hill there stands a unique lookout tower called Stezka nad vinohrady (Trail Above the Vineyards). 🍇

We set off from Hodonín and it was about 25 kilometres to the tower in Kobylí. The drive went nicely, but just as we started approaching our destination by car, a rather strong smell wafted into the cabin. Probably from a nearby cowshed… 🐄 🙂

It was truly the real “scent of home,” as they say. 😃 While my husband and I couldn’t stop laughing, the rest of the car — especially my father-in-law — found it absolutely foul. 😃 And from that day on, he knows exactly where Kobylí is. 😀

You can park for free a short walk below the tower, so we left the car there — luckily there was a free spot.

The tower itself, however, has to be reached on foot. It’s about 500 metres, which doesn’t sound terrible, but unfortunately it’s a bit uphill.

The path to the tower leads directly through the vineyard. On the paved track (as you can see in the photo below), the Moravian heat was quite a challenge for our seniors. After all, they’re nearly seventy, and even though they’re active, the combination of sunshine and the incline took its toll. They were pretty worn out by the little hill, but they made it at a steady pace. 👍

The Stezka nad vinohrady lookout tower is relatively new — it was officially opened in October 2018.

It was designed by architects Jiří Vojtěšek and Jakub Roleček.

The core idea was to create a lookout tower that would be fully accessible to everyone — elderly people, mothers with prams, and people in wheelchairs. The spiral shape is meant to symbolise the life cycle of nature and the continuous development of Kobylí.

At the same time, the circular form fits beautifully into the surrounding landscape — from a distance it almost blends in with the rounded Moravian hills and vineyards. 🌀

As you make your way up the spiral, you can read various years written on the wooden floor. Next to each year is a short note about what happened at that time.

The tower stands 7.5 metres above the ground. The highest point is also enclosed by a glass wall. From there, a wonderful view awaits you — endless rows of vineyards and the Moravian countryside. ❤️

We also ran into plenty of cyclists, hikers, and even mothers with prams, so it’s clearly a popular spot for a day out. 🚴

During our visit there was also an open refreshment stand. It was called “Kobylí búda,” so you can grab something tasty there too. 🍷

If you’re passing through the area, definitely stop by. That stairless tower is truly an experience for the whole family. 🙂

Do you know of any other stairless lookout towers in the Czech Republic? 🙂
